GT - EP1: Schrödinger’s Low-End

I’m starting a series called Ghost Tones.

It’s for music producers, composers, and sound people who are interested in the invisible side of production.

Not just what frequency is playing.

But what the listener thinks is playing.

Not just what the speaker is doing.

But what the brain is completing.

Because a lot of great production is not loudness, plugins, or “better sounds.”

It is perception.

It is the little invisible decisions that make a track feel wider, heavier, closer, deeper, more emotional, more expensive, or more addictive — without the listener being able to explain why.

That is where psychoacoustics comes in.

Psychoacoustics is the study of how humans perceive sound. And for producers, it is one of the most underrated weapons.

Because the listener is not hearing your track through a spectrum analyzer.

They are hearing it through memory, expectation, biology, emotion, attention, and imagination.

Their brain fills gaps.

Their ear gets fooled.

Their body reacts before logic catches up.

Ghost Tones is about those moments.

The sounds that are not fully there, but are still felt.

The mix decisions that work because the brain finishes the sentence.

The first one is one of my favourites:

Schrödinger’s Low-End.

Bass that is both there and not there.

Technically missing.

Perceptually present.

This comes from a psychoacoustic phenomenon called the missing fundamental.

Let’s say you have a bass note at 50 Hz.

On a big system, that 50 Hz has weight. It moves air. It gives the track that chest-level pressure.

But on a phone speaker, laptop speaker, or small Bluetooth speaker?

That 50 Hz is basically gone.

Tiny speakers cannot reproduce deep sub frequencies properly. So if your bassline lives only in the sub, most listeners will not actually hear the movement of the bass.

Your mix may look huge in the studio.

Then on a phone, the bass disappears like it has unpaid rent.

This is where the brain does something insane.

If you saturate or distort that bass, you generate harmonics above the fundamental.

So if the original bass note is 50 Hz, saturation can create energy at:

100 Hz
150 Hz
200 Hz
250 Hz
and above

These are the upper harmonics of that original note.

Now here is the trick.

Even if you remove the actual 50 Hz with a high-pass filter, the brain can still infer that 50 Hz is there because it hears the harmonic pattern above it.

The fundamental is missing.

But the brain reconstructs it.

That is the missing fundamental.

That is phantom bass.

That is Schrödinger’s Low-End.

The sub is not physically there in the speaker.

But it is still alive in the listener’s perception.

You are not making a phone speaker magically produce sub-bass. That is nonsense.

You are doing something smarter.

You are giving the listener’s brain enough clues to imagine the bass.

And that is the difference between mixing sound and mixing perception.

This is why a bass can feel huge on a phone without actually having much sub in it. The low-end feels present because the harmonics are speaking in a range the speaker can actually reproduce.

This is also why saturation is not just “making things dirty.”

Used properly, saturation is translation.

A clean sine sub may sound beautiful on studio monitors. But take it to a phone and it can vanish.

Add controlled saturation, and suddenly the bassline has a body. The listener can follow the notes.

Not because the sub is truly there.

Because the brain believes it is.

How to use this in your production

Take a simple sub-bass or 808.

Duplicate it.

Keep one layer clean for the real low-end.

On the second layer, add saturation, distortion, overdrive, amp, tape, or any harmonic generator.

Then high-pass this saturated layer so it does not fight the actual sub. You may cut everything below 100–150 Hz depending on the sound.

Now blend it in quietly.

The clean layer gives you real weight on big systems.

The saturated layer gives you translation on small systems.

Together, they create the illusion of a bass that feels bigger than it technically is.

Ableton exercise

  1. Create a MIDI bassline with a simple sine wave.

  2. Duplicate the track.

  3. On the duplicate, add Saturator.

  4. Push the drive until the bass starts speaking in the midrange.

  5. Add EQ Eight after it.

  6. High-pass the duplicate around 120 Hz.

  7. Now mute the original clean sub.

You should still hear the pitch of the bassline.

That is the missing fundamental at work.

Now bring the clean sub back in.

The bass should feel fuller, clearer, and more audible without needing to turn the actual sub up like a maniac.

Where this works beautifully

808s.
Synth bass.
Moog-style bass.
Kick-bass hybrids.
Low male vocals.
Cinematic drones.
Bass guitars that need to survive on phones.

The point is not to make everything distorted.

The point is to create just enough harmonic information for the brain to finish the job.

That is the whole game.

Great production is not always about adding more sound.

Sometimes it is about removing the right thing and letting the listener’s mind replace it.

That is psychoacoustics.

That is the missing fundamental.

That is Schrödinger’s Low-End.

Bass that disappears on paper.

But still haunts the room.

After hours.
