Stop Worshipping Execution (or Ideas)

Some people build their entire personality around “execution is everything.”
Others act like ideas are rare diamonds, and the rest is just admin work.

Both are wrong. Both are right.
But only if you know when to be which.

Here’s the lie:
“Execution >> Ideas”
As if life’s a binary. As if you have to pick a side.
Most people pick sides because it’s easier than sitting with contradiction.

I used to think it was all about execution—maybe because every TED talk, LinkedIn guru, and ex-CEO keeps repeating it.
But the truth?
Ideas are king, but only at the start.
When you’re crawling from nothing—0 to 1, scribbles to a sketch, fog to form.
That stage? Every extra ounce of raw, weird, unfiltered idea is worth 10x.
Don’t let anyone tell you to “just do it” when you haven’t figured out what to do.

But then, the game flips.
The second something’s presentable—when the blank page isn’t blank anymore—
Ideas start losing their edge.
Now, every hour you waste “tweaking” is just you hiding from the work.
Now it’s about getting your hands dirty, outlasting your own boredom, making the damn thing real.

It’s asymmetrical returns:

• In the beginning: Idea >> Execution

• Once you’re rolling: Execution >> Idea

Symmetry only shows up once you’ve moved past the starting line.

Nobody tells you this. Because timing isn’t sexy.
Timing doesn’t fit on a t-shirt.

But the only thing that decides whether ideas or execution matter… is when you are in the process.

Most people get stuck because they confuse one for the other.
They keep executing a dead idea. Or they keep “ideating” and never ship.
I’ve done both. We all have.

The truth is—
Ideas save you from running in circles.
Execution saves you from staying in your head forever.

But knowing when to switch…
That’s the real art. That’s the part nobody teaches.

You want a shortcut? There isn’t one.
But here’s a compass:

Don’t be the genius who never ships.
Don’t be the machine who never thinks.

If timing is the only god in this business—
Worship at the altar, but don’t lose your soul.

And if you still need a mantra:
Be early with ideas. Be relentless with execution.
And for god’s sake, don’t get stuck in between.
That’s where dreams go to die.
